So… what do we make of this?

Okay, I’m going to fold a couple of different theories together, so if it feels like this interpretation is based on a house of cards, then that’s… because it is. But I’d like to think I have a decent track record of pulling stuff out of my butt like this, so let’s carry on.

I think this is Rose trying to warn Steven he’s on the wrong track. 

I’ve suspected for a while now that Rose is still conscious to some degree inside Steven. Stevonnie’s dream on the Jungle Moon gave them the password they needed to use Yellow Diamond’s computer and call for help. Steven’s dream on Earth’s moon base tipped him off that Pearl had the answers he needed about Pink Diamond’s past. This could be a coincidence, or it could be Rose’s way of guiding Steven with her memories. (Plus, as a purely subjective matter, it just makes sense to me for Rose to still be alive. Her gem’s intact. Her memories are demonstrably still around. It makes sense that her consciousness would still exist, even if she’s only awake on the edges of Steven’s mind)

So this is Rose’s way of saying that she tried to do what Steven is about to do, and it didn’t work. Pink Diamond tried to stay happy and cheerful and hoped that it would change the other Diamonds eventually, and look where it lead. Her Pearl was turned into an empty husk, Rose ended up on earth, and the rest is history.

Also the fact that it’s Rose’s hair specifically coming out of Steven feels relevant to her own identity. Steven is trying to emulate Pink Diamond, but that wasn’t his mom. Steven’s mom was Rose Quartz. She tried to change the Diamonds as Pink Diamond. She couldn’t. She tried to change things as Rose Quartz. She may have lost the war, but even then she achieved more as Rose than she ever did as Pink.

Steven’s ignoring the lessons learned by his mom and starting back on square one, and she knows it.

This is the road to ruin, and we’re starting at the end.
